| "While on a camping trip, a young boy and his older brother stray from their family and happen upon a carnival in the middle of nowhere." This is our logline, or really, what the novel is all about. Keep it in mind. |
So, we have our idea. But what happens? The Beat sheet is where we break down the book, chapter by chapter, scene by scene, so we know what happens before we start writing. Add your ideas and thoughts. Remember, if you don't want your work mercilessly edited, changed and rewritten--then don't contribute.

[edit] Chapter One
(Read / Write / Edit the Chapter One draft)
- The family heads off on a camping trip, which has been a family 'tradition' forever. Each year they try to find a different place to go. This year they are going a little further away than usual. Everybody but Ethan is kind of aware that this may be the last one that Tam can be with them.
- Ethan Brown strays from the family, after wagering with his older brother that he is better at sniffing out truffles
- Tam Brown, Ethan's older brother, goes looking for him, thinking to search areas Ethan has missed
- As Tam looks, his mind wanders to this being the last truffle hunt he may take with the family--since their father has decided to give up the restaurant business (This item has a continuity problem, please see the TALK page)
- Tam finally catches up with Ethan, but they realize that they're hopelessly lost
- In the forest, they hear laughter and music up ahead, but they can't see where the sounds are coming from -- yet.
- Getting a little closer, they realize it's a carnival. In the middle of a huge gorge no one knew existed.
- The chapter ends.
[edit] Chapter Two
(Read / Write / Edit the Chapter Two draft)
- Outside the forest, at the campground, the sun is setting, and the parents are worried because the kids haven't come back yet.
- They contact the forest rangers, who seem less than willing to help.
- The dad contacts an old friend, now living in Hawaii -- our infamous private investigator, Ed Hennaman.
- Inside the forest, at least, inside the Carnivale, time seems to stand still (our characters don't notice this yet). A few minutes on the outside is hours, or even days in the Carnivale.
- Ethan and Tam meet The Ring Master.
- The Ring Master gives them a tour of the Carnivale's more unusual inhabitants.
- Along the way, we meet the Bearded Lady, who...
- We meet the Lion Tamer, who...
- We meet the Strong Man, who...
- We get a hint that something not very nice is going on inside the Carnivale. It looks like the Carnivale's inhabitants are being enslaved.
- Ed Hennaman speaks with three volunteers at the homeless shelter, who themselves seem a little strange. One is a young college girl, one is the minister at a local church, and one is a very elderly lady.
- Ed decides the three each know more than they are saying.
- Ethan and Tam want to leave the Carnivale, but they can't seem to find their way out.

(Read / Write / Edit the Chapter Three draft)
