"Some of the Carnivale folk have been a part of the fold for a while, others haven't. As we learn more about them, we discover each has a dark past--something that they wish they hadn't done, something they wish they could forget about. None of them like to talk about how they joined the Carnivale, or why."

I suggest that the Carnival could actually be hell -- but a unique hell where you get what you wanted in life. The strong man was actually a weak man who wanted to "feel strong" so he strangled someone and killed them. Now he is so strong, he is good for nothing. He breaks everything he uses. The bearded lady, well she was a real vein woman. She wanted everyone to know her for how she looked, now she's a bearded woman. The acrobats were really into pushing "family values" on others, now they are forced to do everything as a family for eternity, no room for individuality or "lone" time. Can't think of anything for the fire eater or lion tamer.

The characters of the family will then be asked to join the carnival, and will be shown what they will get, if they really keep pursuing their "passion" at the expense of others.
